NigComSat alerts Nigerians on cybersecurity threats as Nigeria marks awareness month

As the country celebrates international cybersecurity awareness month in October, Nigeria Communication Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) has alerted the unsuspecting Nigerians especially internet users to be cautious of malicious and dangerous sites and as well take precaution in the cyberspace. The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, NIGCOMSAT, Dr Abimbola Alale made the call recently while celebrating the International Cybersecurity month in Abuja.

The cybersecurity awareness month is being celebrated in line with the vision of the Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy. While reeling out some internet guides to users, Dr Alale said that the cyberspace is filled with malicious codes, links, Trojans and viruses with millions of unsuspecting users becoming vulnerable to these threats more than ever before. ‘As we embark on the cybersecurity awareness month, we are giving you some tips that could keep you safe on the internet. Internet users are advised to form the habit of securing their devices by using strong passwords and biometric features if possible”, she advised.

She emphasized that though using a strong password is desirable, it is also important to use two or multi a factor authentication system as it comprises of two or more layered protection. She cautioned the public to desist from connecting into the public network and counselled that internet users should “connect to secured and trusted or private networks” especially when handling financial or any sensitive transactions. In a statement signed by the General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Adamu Idris, she said data management users are advised to back up periodically.

‘It is crucial to back up your data. Remember malicious threats and hackers do not always want to steal just your data, but sometimes the game plan is to encrypt or erase it to either cause harm or seek a ransom.  Think before you click. Clicking the wrong link could cost you dearly’, she said. According to her malicious links can damage in several ways. She, therefore, asked the public to inspect links and ensure that such are from a trusted source before clicking.

She added the public to watch out for phishing attack which is one of the greatest cybersecurity threats, update connected systems regularly to keep software protected from bugs and other vulnerability and internet, users should endeavour to use good antivirus software and firewall solution.
